audio restoration notebook
the disney 78 rpm project

These little 5 inch records pose numerous challenges in restoration. First of all, they're on what is essentially cardboard stock. And then there's the glue that holds the vinyl recorded surface to the cardboard; it likes to leak out from underneath the grooves sometimes. The cardboard is regular cereal box stock...hardly the stuff of some of those classic heavy vinyl records from the London label, for instance! These little babies are very fragile and it doesn't take much to damage one. These records came in in very good shape considering their age and composition, but they do tend to want to curl up at the edges due to their inherent 'flimsiness'. My client is a collector so, he naturally takes very good care of his records, but they are what they are, and that makes them challenging! These records originally came on General Mills products starting in 1956. For more information on the history of these and other cereal box offerings, check out these links:

A 5 inch , flimsy record whirling on the turntable at 78rpm (and man, do they spin!), with the ends curled up required that these records be re-mastered at 33 1/3 rpm, then to 45 rpm and back to a tad more than 78 rpm. The recordings were then processed for impulse noises, some of which had to be interpolated, or 'drawn out' of the wave forms created upon transfer to the digital domain. Lastly, they were processed for noise reduction using FFT software.
The results were simply outstanding. I've some examples of the before and after. Please feel free to download these to see for yourself! Imagine what i can do for your LP or traditional 78 rpm recording! I'd love to hear from you on your project needs!
